Question

Enable Modern Authentication for Office 2013

Answer

What is modern authentication?

Modern authentication brings Active Directory Authentication Library (ADAL)-based sign-in to Office client apps across platforms. This enables sign-in features such as Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)and it removes the need for Outlook to use the basic authentication protocol.

There are several steps involved to enable modern authentication for any devices running Windows (for example on laptops and tablets) that have Microsoft Office 2013 installed.

1. Edit the following registry keys. The keys have to be set on each device that you want to enable for modern authentication:

Registry key Type Value
 HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Common\Identity\EnableADAL REG_DWORD1
 HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Common\Identity\Version REG_DWORD1

2. In Outlook 2013, navigate to File\Outlook Account\Sign out.

3. Restart computer. (Do not open Outlook)

4. Wait for Duo enforcement. Verify that Duo has been enforced using CAS sites.
