As text messages and phone callbacks will no longer be available for Duo after February 15, 2025, we understand the need for information on additional options, especially for those who may not have access to a smartphone or have other accessibility needs. Security keys are an option for those looking for an alternative.
A security key is a hardware security device that helps verify users' identities through multi-factor authentication.
FIDO2 compliant security keys are recommended. The Information Security Office (ISO) recommends the following two models:
YubiKey 5C NFC
YubiKey 5 NFC
Access to Security Keys
The UCD Bookstore plans to sell the YubiKey security devices. Departments can also purchase these devices from the Aggie Enterprise CDW-G and Amazon Punchout.
For financial or accessibility needs:
Students may contact the Student Disability Center (sdc@ucdavis.edu or 530-752-3184) for accessibility concerns.
Faculty may contact their department chair.
Staff may contact their supervisor for next steps.
Enroll your Security Key in Duo
To enroll your security key, open your web browser to https://computingaccounts.ucdavis.edu, select the Duo Multifactor Authentication option, and log into CAS.
Once you receive the following prompt, select Get Started.
Next, select the Security key option.
Ensure your security key is connected to the device that you are performing the registration steps on and select Continue.
Follow your device prompts (Windows prompt demonstrated in image) and select Security key when prompted to Choose where to save this passkey.
Your device will provide a confirmation message once the passkey is saved to the security key.
