Question

As an instructor, how do I find student ID information in UC Davis Canvas?

Overview

Student ID information can be viewed in the People tool, but it is not exportable from there. If you click on People, in the course navigation menu you can see student ID numbers under the SIS ID column.

Though Student ID information is not displayed in the Canvas gradebook, it is available in the gradebook export. In the export file there is a column titled “SIS User ID" that has the student ID number associated with each student. Note that any information in the Notes column will not be exported.

Information on exporting gradebooks can be found in the Canvas documentation, but we have also detailed the process on viewing the student ID information in the gradebook export.

Answer

To export the gradebook which contains the Student ID numbers, follow the directions below. (Images are courtesy of Canvas Guides)

  1. Click Grades in Course Navigation.

  2. In the upper right hand corner, click Export and then click CSV File. The CSV file can be found in your Downloads folder.

  3. After you have exported the CSV file, if you return to export a file again, the previous exports will appear in the drop-down menu.

  4. When you open the CSV file, student IDs will be visible in the “SIS User ID” column.
