How do I access the campus wired networks with my Windows computer?
Overview
To connect your Windows PC to many of the wired networks on campus, you must register your computer's network port MAC (Media Access Control) address. This is a unique identifier specific to your computer and the hardware inside it.
Answer
To obtain your computer's physical address:
- Click on the Windows Start icon.
- Click Run from the Menu, type cmd in the text bar, then hit Enter to open a Windows Command Prompt screen.
- In the Command Prompt window, type ipconfig /all and press Enter.
- In the text that appears, identify the section labeled "Ethernet adapter Ethernet", "Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection" or similar. Under this, look for the "Physical Address" line and make note of the value listed. Example of a physical address: F0-1D-AE-22-41-3D
NOTE: Ignore the other sections on this list, such as those labeled "Wireless", "Wi-Fi", or "Bluetooth" - The main "Ethernet Adapter" address is the one you need. - Go to the Computing Account Services site.
- Select Ethernet registration and follow the instructions.
- Once you have registered your address, you should have a connection in about 15 minutes.
