Question

I want to change my name in the system.

Overview

There are certain situations where a name change in the system is requested. There is a combination of scenarios, and we do our best to accommodate all of them. Understand that performing a LoginID and Email rename has the potential to disrupt account access to various systems across campus. Some disruptions are temporary (24-48 hours), and some are permanent (no more access). There are hundreds, possibly thousands, of systems across campus and most of them are not owned or supported by IET. As such, we're unable to offer you assistance if a name change, email rename or LoginID rename causes you to lose access to those systems.

Answer

Preferred Name Change

If you're a student:
Students have the ability to perform a Preferred Name Change in the Registrar's System. Information about that process is explained on their website.

Students using DavisMail, please submit this form to have your DavisMail display name modified.

If you're faculty/staff:
Employees are able to change their display name in the UC Davis Campus Directory. Once submitted, individual listings are routed to a department approver and finalized by Directory Services.

However, these names do not propagate into the student information system (SISWeb) or Banner. To officially change it in that system, use this form.

Employee names are maintained in UCOP's UC Path system and legal names are used in this system.

Legal Name Change

To change your name in Banner: Contact the Office of the University Registrar for assistance.

To change your name in UC Path: Contact the UC Path or your local Human Resources for assistance.

MailID Rename/Change

When a name change is performed it might make your current email address inaccurate for your new last name. We have the ability to rename your email address and in doing so a courtesy 180-day auto-forward of the previous email address is also granted. A MailID rename does not cause the catastrophic scenarios that a LoginID rename does but it's important to note that several systems related to your email address will not work for up to a week. There is no way to expedite this process so please plan accordingly.

Secondly, a MailID rename can only be processed when a legal name change has already been processed.

To change your MailID, use this form located in the Service Catalog.

LoginID Rename/Change

While it is technically possible to perform a LoginID rename, only in extreme circumstances will an exception be granted to individuals. Because of the way the permit assignment system works (which allows access to campus computing services) and how LoginIDs are stored in remote systems (usually to grant access to restricted services), our experience has been that renaming a LoginID will usually cause more grief and frustration for users than it's worth.

Access to many campus systems will be severed permanently, access to files, emails and other resources under the previous LoginID will be lost forever and some systems will require administrators to recreate your record(s) in their systems.

If you have an extreme circumstance that you'd like to discuss with IT Express please contact them via email.
