What is the email service available at UC Davis?

Overview

The campus maintains two central email services:

• Office 365: http://365.ucdavis.edu/
• Davismail (Gmail): https://davismail.ucdavis.edu/

Although there are exceptions, which are outlined in the Exceptions section below, generally most undergraduate students are on DavisMail and faculty/staff are on Office 365.
Both services are available while they actively attend or are employed by UC Davis.

Office 365

Office 365 is Microsoft’s cloud-based version of Exchange services. This service is primarily used by faculty and staff, post Doctoral staff, students in staff positions, temporary affiliates, and many Graduate and Post Grad students. However, there are some exceptions to this rule, which are listed below.

A few highlights of Office 365 are as follows:

• Email (50 GB, default quota) and calendaring
• OneDrive cloud storage (1 TB)
• Microsoft Office Web Apps
• Microsoft Office download and license for 5 computers (Windows and Mac)

DavisMail

DavisMail is the Google Apps for Education branding that is used at UC Davis. This service is predominantly used by undergraduate students. There are some exceptions to this rule, which are listed below. Due to recent service changes from Google, UC Davis implemented 20 GB total storage quotas on staff, student, and affiliate accounts currently. 

A few highlights of DavisMail are as follows:

• Email and calendaring
• Mobile access
• Google Drive

Exceptions

While typically students are on DavisMail and faculty/staff are on Office 365, the following is a list of exceptions to this rule:

• UC Davis Health Departments and Majors - Individuals who have any affiliation with UC Davis Health (UCDH) are provided with email accounts through Office 365 and are not eligible for DavisMail or Google Workspace due to HIPAA regulations.
• School of Veterinary Medicine Majors - Students who have any affiliation with the School of Veterinary Medicine are provided email accounts through Office 365.
• Visiting Students on Temporary Affiliate Forms - Visiting students who are sponsored through the Temporary Affiliate Form (TAF) process are provided email accounts through Office 365.
• Some University Extension Students - Students who have an affiliation with the University Extension may have email through Office 365 or DavisMail, depending on when the email account was created and prior affiliation.

How do I know which email service I am on?

To determine which service an email account is on, active users can log into my.ucdavis.edu and click the email button to go to your email account. The service you are on will be listed on the Mailbox Location line.
