Overview

The instructions below will guide you through how to update your Duo Multifactor Authentication account to reflect a new smartphone. Follow the steps below if you have one of your currently Duo enrolled devices with you, such as your old smartphone.

If you do not have one of your currently enrolled devices with you, you may have problems completing these instructions. If so, call IT Express at (530) 754–4357, and they will remove your previous device and assist with registration of the new one.

NOTE: You will need your Apple Account or Google Play Store password to complete Step 2.

STEP 1: Begin Duo Enrollment from Your Computer

Note: These steps must be completed on a laptop or desktop computer.

a) Open a web browser and navigate to https://computingaccounts.ucdavis.edu.

b) Select Duo Multifactor Device Manager from the main menu.

c) Log into the Central Authentication Service (CAS) using your Kerberos LoginID and Passphrase.

d) Use your old device to authenticate with Duo via one of the available options. If you are unable to authenticate, please call (530) 754-4357 for assistance.

e) Your browser will automatically verify your Duo eligibility, then take you to the Duo Device Manager screen. You may need to CAS authenticate a second time before it redirects you.

f) If you have the same phone number, select I have a new phone under to the old device you wish to update. Then, select Get Started.

If you have a new phone number, select Add a device instead. Select the option for Duo Mobile that appears, then enter and confirm your phone number.

g) To confirm ownership of the current device, Duo Mobile will send you a passcode via SMS.

STEP 2: Install the Duo Mobile App on Your Smartphone

a) After verifying your phone number, you'll need to download the Duo Mobile app to your new device.

b) Go to the App Store or Play Store on your smartphone, and search for Duo Mobile.

c) Install the free Duo Mobile app on your smartphone. You will need your Apple Account or Google Play Store password to complete installation.

STEP 3:  Complete Enrollment Using Your Computer and Your Smartphone

a) After completing the installation of the app on the smartphone, return to your computer's browser and click Next.

b) You will be provided a QR code to scan to complete your new device's activation.

c) Return to your smartphone and open the Duo Mobile app, then click Add (+) in the upper right corner of the phone screen. On the next screen that appears, select Use QR Code.

d) From the Duo Mobile app, scan the barcode that displays on the computer screen.

e) A green checkmark will appear over the QR code on the computer screen, followed by a confirmation message. Please note that SMS text message and phone call authentication options may be disabled on February 15, 2025. For more information, please visit https://movetoduo.ucdavis.edu/.

f) The Duo Mobile app on your smartphone will prompt you to name your account. You can leave the name default, or rename it if you wish. This will only change the way it is listed in your Duo Mobile app. After naming your device, the app will display a 6-digit passcode. This means the activation is complete.
