Frequently Asked Questions

I have a gaming console, multi-media device, wireless printer or smart TV. How do I connect to eduroam?

Most of these devices will not work on the wireless in the dorms. eduroam uses an 802.1x authentication method that many of these devices do not support. Please consult your device's manufacturer for eduroam compatibility.

If the device has an ethernet port, you can register it to use the wired connection in the room. To be able to use them on the network, register them with their MAC address at the computing accounts page using the Ethernet Registration option.

have a device with an Ethernet port. How do I connect it to ResNet?

You will need to register the MAC address of the device in order for it to connect. Follow the instructions for your operating system:

My device does not have an Ethernet port, how can I connect it to ResNet?

Some manufacturers make Ethernet adapters that connect via USB or Thunderbolt. Please consult your device's manufacturer for options before making a purchase. (Note: If an Ethernet adapter is used, the MAC address would be specific to the adapter rather than the device being connected.)

We have more than one device in our room, how can we connect multiple devices to ResNet?

You will need to purchase a simple hub or switch. There are several options available from manufacturers like Cisco or Netgear. It does not need to be an enterprise grade device.

Note: Do not purchase a router if you live in an area with eduroam access.

Areas without eduroam like Solano Park and College of La Rue must use a router for wireless access. Please note this must be a standalone router, and not a modem/router combined unit.

You will need to register the MAC address for the router and any/all wired devices connecting through the router at the computing accounts page using the Ethernet Registration option. If you have any issues registering the wireless router, please call IT Express for assistance at (530) 754-4357.
