What are some good tips for properly securing my laptop computer?

The IET Security Team has prepared a helpful list for your to consider when securing your portable computer equipment:
- Use a cable lock to secure your laptop to a large and/or stationary item, such as a desk. Some cables set off an alarm when cut or disconnected.
- Don't leave an unlocked laptop in public places, including libraries or study lounges.
- If you must leave your laptop in your car, put it in your trunk or anywhere out of sight. Lock your doors!
- Carry your laptop in a nondescript case, not a computer bag.
- Prevent thieves from accessing information on your laptop by requiring a password to access your computer.
- Disable any guest accounts.
- Don’t use any feature that permits your computer to remember your passwords.
- Record and safeguard the serial number of your laptop computer.
- Consider using a service that can track stolen computers. To prevent access to sensitive data, some vendors offer a remote erase function.
- Inspect your computer for personal identity data and move files with such data to an encrypted USB drive. Personal identity data includes your name and Social Security number, financial account number, driver’s license number or health information. Or, encrypt all data on your laptop. - Disable booting from a USB or CD. Set a password on your BIOS so only you can change this setting.
- Encrypt your hard drive. If your laptop is lost or stolen, the data on it is protected.
- If your department offers a VPN, use it. A VPN ensures that your data communications are encrypted.
- Regularly update your computer. Manufacturers offer updates to patch known vulnerabilities.
- Be careful when connecting to public networks. Avoid entering passwords and other sensitive information.
- Use antivirus software.
