Question

How do I access my DavisMail via an email application (like Outlook, Thunderbird or Apple Mail) or via a mobile device (like an iPhone or Android smartphone)?

Overview

This article contains the setup instructions necessary to access your email outside of the web. You also have the ability to configure your DavisMail settings to enable POP or IMAP access, although IMAP is preferred. However, before you configure your email program to allow POP or IMAP access, you need to set a GOOG passphrase. Your GOOG passphrase will be the POP or IMAP password to your email program, so it is important to remember it. Please note that after you set your new GOOG passphrase, it may take up to 15 minutes or longer for it to take effect.

Answer

Step #1: Setting the GOOG passphrase

  1. Go to the Computing Accounts page at http://accounts.ucdavis.edu/.
  2. Click Change your passphrase
  3. Enter your identity information, then click Submit Information.
  4. Enter your Kerebos LoginID in the LoginID field.
  5. Select Kerberos Passphrase.
  6. Unselect Change my passphrase for all services except DavisMail.
  7. When you are done, click Continue.
  8. Next, unselect all of the boxes except for GOOG: DavisMail permit. Click Continue.
  9. On the New Passphrase page, set your GOOG Passphrase. The passphrase you set for DavisMail POP/IMAP access will be sent to Google+.

Note: For this reason, we recommend that you create a passphrase that is different from your campus Kerberos passphrase.

Step #2: Enable POP or IMAP in the webmail interface

  1. Go to https://my.ucdavis.edu/.
  2. On the top right corner of the page, click Sign In.
  3. Authenticate via CAS.
  4. Click on myEmail in the top right corner of the page. At this point, you should be able to access your DavisMail.
  5. Go to the top right hand corner of the screen, and click the gear icon then Settings.
  6. Click the Forwarding and POP/IMAP option on the Settings bar.
  7. Finally, choose whether to Enable POP or IMAP (IMAP is preferred).
  8. Click Save Changes.

Step #3: Enable less secure apps to connect to DavisMail

Note: This setting is not available for accounts with 2-Step Verification enabled. Such accounts require an application-specific password for less secure apps access. See Sign in using App Passwords for more information.

Refer to Allowing less secure apps to connect to DavisMail or follow these steps:

  1. Login to the web interface for DavisMail via at https://davismail.ucdavis.edu/.
    • Note: User your Kerberos LoginID and Passphrase, NOT the GOOG passphrase you set in Step #1
  2. Click on your profile picture/icon in the upper right-hand corner of your browser screen
  3. Click the My Account button. A new tab/window will load the Google "My Account" portal page
  4. Click the Sign-in & Security heading
  5. Scroll to the bottom of this page and you'll see the Allow less secure apps option. Toggle the choice to ON.
