Question

How do I connect to a Microsoft remote desktop?

Overview

Some department on campus have made available a computer, which can be logged into from other locations, to their staff and faculty. These system are usually designed to allow access to services that may not be available at a standard workstation or via a web interface.

If you would like to save a link to this connection on your desktop, follow the instructions below.

  1. From the desktop Search box (magnifying glass in the upper right corner), search for "remote".
  2. Select the Remote Desktop Connection tool from the results.
  3. In the Computer field enter information provided by your local IT
  4. Select Show Options
  5. Under Connection Settings select save as
  6. A new window will open, chose the location in which you would like to save the icon
  7. Once you found the right location, select save
  8. Close the Remote Desktop Connection tool with the x in the upper right.

Windows 10

  1. In the search bar in the bottom left hand corner, type Remote Desktop Connection.
  2. Select the Remote Desktop Connection tool from the results.
  3. In the Computer field enter information provided by your local IT
  4. Select Connect
  5. You will then be prompted to enter your username and password

  1. In the search bar in the bottom left hand corner, type Remote Desktop Connection.
  2. Select the Remote Desktop Connection tool from the results.
  3. In the Computer field enter information provided by your local IT
  4. Select Show Options
  5. On the General tab and under Connection Settings select save as
  6. A new window will open, chose the location in which you would like to save the icon
  7. Once you found the right location, select save
  8. Close the Remote Desktop Connection tool with the x in the upper right.

macOS

  1. Open the App Store.
  2. Search for the Microsoft Remote Desktop App.
  3. Install the above application (Please note this requires an Apple ID).
  4. Navigate to your applications, and run the now installed Microsoft Remote Desktop.
  5. With the application open, select New.
  6. Enter the information provided by your local IT

With that above information in, press the red x in the upper left to save the information. Then to connect, either double-click the connection name or with it selected hit Start.
