Question

How do I connect to a network printer?

Overview

The majority of departments on campus rely on networked printers as a service to their staff and faculty members. The following information contains steps on how to connect to network printers in various ways.

Note: Wireless printing is not allowed on campus Wi-Fi networks.

Answer

Windows 8/10

  1. Click the Start button in the lower left corner of your screen.
  2. Search for printers and select the Device and Printers option.
  3. Select your needed printer if it is found, if not select The printer that I want isn’t listed.
  4. Select Find a printer in the directory, based on location or feature.
  5. Click Next.
  6. Enter the necessary information to find your printer.
    Note: you may have to find this number by contacting your department IT office.
  7. Once the printer is selected, click ok.

Print Server

  1. Click the Start button in the lower left corner of your screen.
  2. Search for printers and select the Device and Printers option.
  3. Click on the navigation bar at the top, this will allow you to enter text into that field.
  4. Enter your print server information
    • Example: \\name-print\ or \\name.ucdavis.edu
  5. Hit Enter on your keyboard, this will access a view of all printers on this print server.
  6. Right-click on the needed printer and select connect from the menu.

IP Address

  1. Click the Start button in the lower left corner of your screen.
  2. Search for printers and select the Device and Printers option
  3. Select your needed printer if it is found, if not select The printer that I want isn’t listed.
  4. Select Add a printer using a TCP/IP address or hostname.
  5. Set Device type: Autodetect
  6. Set Hostname or IP address: 000.000.000.000
    Note: you may have to find this number by contacting your department IT office.
  7. Leave the Port field has is.
  8. Click Next.
  9. Once successfully added, click Next.
  10. Set to default printer if desired and click Finish.

Apple macOS

Print Server

  1. Click the apple in the upper left corner.
  2. Select System Preferences.
  3. Click on Printer & Scanners.
  4. Click on the + sign in the lower left.
  5. Look for your network printer in the list displayed or select add printer or scanner….
  6. If the printer you need is not displayed please see the instructions for adding via IP address.

IP Address

  1. Click the apple in the upper left corner.
  2. Select System Preferences.
  3. Click on Printer & Scanners.
  4. Click on the + sign in the lower left.
  5. Select the IP tab from the top of the open window.
  6. Set address: 000.000.000.000
  7. Set protocol: HP Jetdirect - Socket
  8. Set Name: Desired name of the network printer
  9. Click Add. As Apple will search out and install the recommended drivers this may take some time depending on your connection.
  10. Once completed the new printer will be added to your list of available printers.
