Question

How should I name my Web CMS assets?

Overview

It may seem as though it makes little difference, but how you name your pages, files and images can determine whether or not these assets appear correctly on the web after you've published them.

Answer

Thankfully the rules are few and fairly easy to remember.

  • Always use lowercase:

wrong: This-Is-a-File-Name.jpg
right: this-is-a-file-name.jpg

  • Use an underscore or hyphen instead of spaces:

wrong: this is a file name.jpg
right: this-is-a-file-name.jpg
OR this_is_a_file_name.jpg
